Portugal’s northern city of Braga, has been elected ‘Best European Destination to Visit in 2021’ by European Best Destinations.
The beautiful city of Braga emerged victorious with 109,902 votes. The city will now be able to proudly display its title of ‘Best European Destination 2021’.
Braga is a lively city in North Portugal, one of the oldest cities in the country with plenty to offer both visitors and residents. The heritage of the city goes back to Roman times, when “Bracara Augusta” was built more than 2,000 years ago, and there are many impressive historical buildings, museums and festivals where visitors can rediscover this heritage.
It also has a variety of beautiful religious buildings, with Holy Week Celebrations and the São João Festival being highlights in both its liturgical and tourist calendar.
The distinction is the “crowning moment for Braga City Council’s policy to promote Braga as a brand internationally” says Mayor Ricardo Rio who also highlights the part played by the many Portuguese spread over the world, not to mention the hard work and efforts of the city itself, its institutions, and the residents themselves.
“We are so immensely proud of this and this award will certainly have an extremely important knock-on effect in terms of tourism, the local and regional economy and Portugal as a whole in the coming years.”
The other cities in the top-5 were Rome, Cavtat, Florence e Sibiu.
Recently Braga was also named as one of the best destinations for North Americans to live in Europe.
