Portugal wins ‘Oscar’ for the best tourist destination in the world for the 3rd time.

For the third consecutive year, Portugal once again was distinguished as the best tourist destination in the world. The World Travel Awards ceremony took place this Thursday in Muscat, Oman.

This distinction was awarded for the first time to Portugal in 2017, renewed in 2018 and again in 2019. In June, the country had already been re-elected the best Tourist Destination in Europe, also for the third consecutive year, at a ceremony held in Madeira.

The strength of Portugal’s tourism economy was reflected with several victories. The Portuguese brought home more than a dozen other awards, such as best hotel, best resort, best airline and best cruise port.

“This award, for being an international award and for the third consecutive time, proves the obvious effort that has been made, both by public and private entities, so that Portugal is indeed a destination of choice when it comes to tourism”, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rita Marques, told Lusa agency.

For Rita Marques, this is news that “reconfirms” that Portugal is “the best tourist destination” in the region and in the world, so she considered it “an honor” to have received this award and stressed the distinction between “the excellence of Portugal and the Portuguese”, while raising “the demand”.

WTA: Portuguese winners

Apart from the “World’s Leading Destination” award, the city of Lisbon is also worthy of note for the second consecutive year as it won the prize for Best City Break in the World. In addition, Madeira was elected the Best Island Destination in the World.

In the airlines’ category, TAP is also to be congratulated for being voted the Best Airline to fly to Africa and the Best Airline to fly to South America. The company also received the award for Best Flight Magazine in the World, with UP Magazine.

In the hotel sector, Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel, in Lisbon, was elected the Best Classic Hotel in the World, while the Dunas Douradas Beach Club, in Almancil, received the award for Best Golf&Villa Resort in the World. Amazing Evolution Management was also elected the Best Boutique Hotel Operator in the World.

The Passadiços do Paiva, in Arouca, have been elected the World’s Best Tourist Attraction in the Adventure field. Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua was distinguished as the Best Leading Conservation Company in the World.

Turismo de Portugal was also distinguished, for the third consecutive year, as the “Best Official Tourism Organization in the World” in the World Travel Awards, announced the entity.
