All third-country citizens who conduct an investment activity, as an individual businessperson or through a company set up in Portugal can obtain the portuguese residency by investment – Residence Permit for Investment (ARI / Golden Visa).
As a permanent resident of Portugal, investors are also classified as a resident of the European Union. They will gain freedom of movement without restrictions in the Schengen Area.
Portugal boasts an excellent reputation and is considered one of the world’s most globalized and peaceful nations, with a high quality of life and a very high Human Development Index ranking. So how can you obtain portuguese residency (Golden Visa) by investment?
Portugal Residency by Investment Options:
- Paying a Capital Transfer of at least €1 million (after Jan of 2022 it will be €1.500,000)
- Generating 10 new jobs for a Portuguese business or single-member company (reduced to 8 positions if in a low-density area).
- Investing €500,000 in real estate.
- Investing €350,000 in a real estate rehabilitation project. This is reduced to €280,000 if located in a low-density area.
- Investing €350,000 into private equity funds, (after Jan of 2022 it will be €500,000)
The real estate property acquired for Golden Visa purposes can be leased for commercial, agricultural or tourism purposes and can be acquired in co-ownership. The acquisition can be made directly by an individual or by a company based in Portugal or in another EU country with a permanent establishment in Portugal.
With a minimum investment of €350,000 in a fund, investors can now apply for Portugal citizenship by investment and take advantage of all its benefits. Each fund has a specific focus on sectors such as energy, industry, technology, or real estate. Funds are regulated by Portugal’s regulator, the Portuguese Securities Markets Commission (CMVM).
The beneficiaries of ARI / Golden Visa are entitled to:
- Residence visa waiver for entering Portugal;
- Living and working in Portugal, on condition that they stay in Portugal for a period of 7 or more days, in the first year, and 14 or more days, in the subsequent years;
- Visa exemption for traveling within the Schengen Area;
- Family reunification;
- Applying for permanent residence.
