The Portuguese capital won the title of European Green Capital Award (EGCA) for 2020.

According to the Jury, Lisbon is strongly committed to sustainable land use and urban mobility. The country bets on  green growth and eco-innovation, climate change adaptation and waste management.

After receiving 2020’s European Green Capital Award in June 2018, the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon officially launched its transition towards a sustainable future program funded by the award granted by the European Union (EU).

Apart from the title, Lisbon received a €350k financial incentive from the European Commission to kick-start its green capital year.

The city is aiming to be a hundred percent carbon-neutral by 2050. Besides that, aims to plant 100,000 trees throughout the year.

Lisbon has made strides in cementing the city’s environmental sustainability strategy and in turn enhancing the quality of life of its citizens. That is to show that environmental protection and economic growth can go hand in hand.

Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, says the country is betting on green, on the environment and on facing climate change and global warming. To that end, Lisbon will be launching environmental initiatives throughout 2020.

The European Green Capital Award aims to recognize, annually, the efforts of cities with a plan to become environmentally friendly and involving their people in environmental, social and economic sustainability.
