With an increase of almost 10 positions and a score of 70.2 out of 100, in 2018 Portugal reaches the level of economic competitivity held in 2005.

In 42nd place last year, in 2018 Portugal rose to 34th place in the Global Competitivity Index 4.0 report by the WEF – World Economic Forum, in a group of 140 countries.

According to the report, Human Capital is the main indicator that drives Portugal´s competitiveness, along with Health, where the country holds the 22nd position worldwide, with 95.3 points.

Other high scores were obtained for Macroeconomic Stability and the quality of Infrastructures with 85 and 83.3 points, in the same order.

In Business Dynamism, Portugal ranks in 27th position (69.7 points) which is also why it reaches the 31st global position for Innovation Ecosystem.

The sharp rise is mainly due to a new methodology that changed the way 60% of the indicators were analysed.

If the new methodology had been applied in 2017, Portugal would have assumed 33rd position in the world ranking. If this were the case, this year we would have seen a drop in position to 34th place.
