Global Peace Index (GPI) 2021 reveals which are the safest countries in the world. According to the latest edition of the GPI, which every year gives a harmony ranking to 163 nationsPortugal is the 4th safest country. The index is compiled by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) and it’s considered the world’s leading yardstick for measuring world peace.

Iceland topped the table for the 13th consecutive year, followed by New Zealand and Denmark. Portugal appears immediately after the top three, reinforcing its status as one of the safest countries in the world.

The GPI measures the state of peace across three domains: the level of societal safety and security; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the degree of militarisation. It is also worth mentioning that The GPI covers 99.7 per cent of the world’s population.

This year’s results show that the average level of global peacefulness deteriorated by 0.07 per cent, even though people believe that the world is now a safer place.
