Portugal reinforces its Very High proficiency position in the EF English Proficiency Index 2020. Portugal rose five places, from #12 in 2019 to #7 in 2020.
Portugal is the seventh country in the world with the best English proficiency, according to ranking “EF English Proficiency Index”2020, which analyzed data from 2,2 million non-native speakers of English in 100 countries and regions around the globe.
The country comes behind Austria (6th position), Norway (5th), Sweden (4th), Finland (3rd), Denmark (2nd) and Holland, which leads this year’s table.
In terms of cities, Porto is, for the second consecutive year, the Portuguese city where English is best spoken, followed by Coimbra, Braga and Lisbon.
There are even gender and age differences. In Portugal, men managed to obtain a better rating than women, although this year the female sex had a “very high” level of English (61,3 points) – higher than the average of men worldwide (49,8, 21 points).
The EF English Proficiency Index is the world’s largest ranking of countries and regions by English skills, based on test results of 2.2m adults in 100 countries & regions.
